Promoting Climate Resilient Cities Through Transportation in Montreal

Just returned from an incredible 10-day trip to Montreal, and I can't stop thinking about their community transportation pathways. Over the course of the trip, my partner and I rode between 120-150 km on BIXI bikes — the city's public bicycle-sharing system. Affordable, easy to use, and such a fantastic way to explore the city in depth. To celebrate my 30th birthday, I also ran 30 km, with plenty of stops at delicious cafés along the way. Between biking and running, I couldn’t help but notice how committed Montreal is to supporting low-cost, climate-conscious transportation options.

On my last day, as I took the metro to the airport, I reflected on how these services shape the city’s energy and liveliness. People were out at all hours, actively moving through the city. Montreal, in my eyes, is leading by example on climate action and justice, and I think cities in the West have much to learn from their approach.
